To be fair, I still use cheugy. But I think I might be the last person to do so. Is it cheugy to say cheugy???

This is interesting, and seems somewhat analogous to the Heisenberg principle. Whereby measuring the position / velocity of an electron, you are altering it. Thoughts?

I feel so out of touch (and old) when I read your posts. Cheugy? Never heard it, never seen it. Slop - never come across it in that meaning. Maybe I'm on another planet. Digitally-wise, I certainly am on another planet. 4chan - the last time I was there only checking if I could find the original caturday, which - it is said - originated on 4chan. I got stuck on Instagram and have never really made it to TikTok.

But yes, the linguistic observer effect: ye goode olde observer's paradox

I believe I have previously seen “slop” used to describe less than great work prior to AI on 4chan while browsing through threads on the video game board. The use would generally be along the lines of “AAA slop” “gatcha slop” “(term to describe a game) slop”. I do agree though that it is now associated more to AI as an actual word rather than an adjective to something but its original use was not AI related until more recently with the boom of AI.

Great read!

You can still look back at your search results from then using the ‘custom range’ for upload date filter. From what I have seen, “slop” was already used before when talking about low effort, short, and reused content (like some YouTube shorts) but mainly from June it started being associated more with AI.

I think this meaning of slop likely evolved out of an older one still seen semi-frequently today, which is that of lazily made content. You'd see the output of reaction Youtubers, for instance, described as slop.
