Welcome to the Etymology Nerd newsletter!

Hi! I’m Adam Aleksic. I’m a linguist and content creator publishing videos as the Etymology Nerd to an audience of over two million. I have an degree in government and linguistics from Harvard University, where I served as President of the Harvard Undergraduate Linguistics Society, and I’ve been making linguistics content in some capacity for over eight years.

Professionally, I’m interested in the intersections between language and social media. I’ve repeatedly contributed to the Washington Post, spoken multiple times on NPR, and been interviewed in The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Economist. I’ve lectured on language and social media at Stanford, Penn, Yale, and other top universities, and my upcoming book Algospeak is available for pre-order now.

“"A masterclass in linguistic evolution... Algospeak is a must read for anyone seeking to understand how we communicate today." - Taylor Lorenz, author of Extremely Online

About this substack

In addition to my short-form video content, I’m aiming to publish long-form thoughts here about four to five times a month. I typically focus on the intersections between language and social media, and all my writing is available for free.

Paid subscribers will have access to my subscriber chat, and support my mission of reaching as many people as possible.

Either way, you can subscribe to get my newsletter in your inbox and access to the publication archives.
